Historic Preservation: NILES COMMUNITY GALLERY

  • Niles Community Gallery: Facade Improvements & Interior Alterations, 2007
Original Architect: Unknown
Size: 5,000 s.f., Two Story
Location: Niles, California

This pro bono work was provided to the Fremont Art Association. With minimal tenant improvements, this gallery space was transformed. The purpose of the design was to better organize the gallery exhibit areas for a great number of artists and for multiple functions. A system of movable panels was devised, supported from existing steel brace frames, which allows for different sized viewing areas. The moving panels can be grouped together (without moving the art) to provide large, open floor areas for lectures and group meetings. In addition, new indirect lighting is provided directly over the panels and main circulation hall. This simple plan rectified the clutter of the existing gallery, providing the necessary space for viewing art.
